Closed Crankcase Ventilation: The CCV System

The purpose of the closed crankcase ventilation system on your vehicle is to remove 100% of the crankcase emissions that are generated while it is in an operating mode from escaping into the atmosphere. This has several different advantages. First there is no release into the atmosphere of these gases so the passenger compartment is not exposed to these toxic fumes. It also helps in improving the fuel efficiency of the engine by recycling the unburnt fuel back into the combustion chambers to capture and use what would have been escaped energy.
From the aspect of the engine, the CCV device is a necessary component to help keep the crankcase clean along with the engine compartment. The gases that seep by the compression rings on the piston are what are in need of being controlled. The amount of gas that does leak by is small, but continuous as the engine is running. This is why the need for a CCV system is necessary. If this blow by gas would be allowed to build up in the crankcase, it would eventually explode or cause the engine to cease running.
The early internal combustion engines did not trap and recycle this gas. They just vented it out into the atmosphere. This left an oily reside on everything it came in contact with. Eventually a filter was placed on the exit port, but this did little to solve the problem.
Eventually the CCV devices have evolved to the point where it is today. It actually helps to improve the performance of the engines. The blow by gases are captured then redirected back into the intake manifold so it can be properly reintroduced to the combustion chamber. There it will be ignited so it can be burned as fuel and to help reduce the amount of toxic fumes that could possibly be released as a function of operating the diesel engine.
A little known advantage of the CCV device is that it actually helps to lubricate the different components and reduces oil consumption of the engine. This will contribute to less wear on the internal components of the engine and allow it to operate more efficiently for a longer period of time.
The Closed Crankcase Ventilation devices are just one of the many things a fleet operator can do to help reduce the emissions that are expelled into the atmosphere from the operating of their fleet. This device also helps to reduce the maintenance costs of the fleet which helps to reduce the over cost of operating the fleet.
