EPA Emissions and Cleaner Air

May you have a great ECOLOGIC weekend

The EPA Emissions limits for diesel trucks in 2011 are mainly unchanged from 2010. With the republicans taking over the legislative house, no new restrictions or lowering of the limits on any component of the diesel exhaust is expected.

The new leader of the House Science Committee has made his priority of global freezing clear that it will be on cleaning up Climategate. Yes, new leader is named Ralph Hall and he refers to the problem of the buildup of man-made greenhouse gases as global freezing instead of global warming. This leads most experts in the environmental field to accept to be on the defense all year, which will allow for no time for progression of new or tougher restrictions in the foreseeable future.

The Obama administration is also ignoring the vehicle emissions side of controlling the effects of global warming.  On January 2, 2011, the first set of new restrictions that were activated by the EPA was on stationary emitters of greenhouse gases. This will include the refineries where the diesel fuel is made, but the not the vehicles that use the fuel.

The current limits were put in place back in 1997 with very little changes to any of them since, and only vehicles made after 1990 are affected.

The use of clean-burning fuels has helped to reduce the amount of air pollutants we all breathe, but more needs to be done. Fortunately, there is a side benefit to cleaning up the exhaust emissions of a diesel powered fleet. This is with an improved performance and fuel economy many of the pollution control devices have shown. One of these is the Closed Crankcase Ventilation system (CCV).

The development of newer and better performing devices that help with the performance of an engine, while at the same time reducing that engine’s harmful emissions, is advantageous to us all. Even with the current EPA emissions at a standstill, the implementation of these new devices will continue to be used to the benefit of all, and in doing so we will all have much cleaner air to breathe.
