Federal Emission Control Grants

The federal emission control grants are still available for fleet owners and others that wish to or need to reduce the amount of emissions their diesel powered vehicles are producing while they are on the road.

The official name of this program is the National Clean Diesel Campaign (NCDC) for the US government. This is so the vehicles on the road can meet the standards set by the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) that was passed in 2005.

This program was established to help clean up the air in America while not placing the entire financial burden on the owners of the diesel powered trucks that help to move the economy forward. With this federal grant money, truck owners are monetarily rewarded for retrofitting pollution control devices on their trucks. These devices have to be proven to meet the qualifications of the program.

Included in the list of devices that owners are given money to retrofit onto their trucks with are diesel particulate filters (DPF) and the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), both having been verified to reduce the emissions on every engine they are retrofitted to.

In 2009, the DERA was one of the programs that were funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that received $300 million. Of the $300 million, $180 million was placed in the coffers of the National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program; $90 million was placed in the state allocated DERA funds, with the remainder in the SmartWay Innovative Finance Program and Emerging Technology Program.

Money is made available every year to help fleet owners finance these upgrades to their diesel powered vehicles with DPFs and DOCs and help clean up the air we all breathe. The larger source each year of this funding is from the federal emission control grants that are available from your government.
